Johannesburg - The Centre for Child Law at the University of Pretoria said on Wednesday it would investigate the swapping of two children at birth in an East Rand hospital in 2010.
“The Centre for Child Law acknowledges the public interest in the story about the baby swap matter,” it said in a statement.
“However, it should be noted that the curator ad litem was only appointed on Monday, May 26, and has not yet begun the investigation. It is thus too early to speculate about the possible outcomes.”
The High Court in Pretoria tasked the centre with investigating and deciding what was in the children's best interests.
The Star newspaper reported that the mistake was discovered recently when one of the fathers requested a paternity test after the child's mother sued him for maintenance. Neither parents' blood tests matched the child's.
The woman reportedly wanted her biological child back, but the other woman did not want to give up the child she had raised.
The girls were born at the Tambo Memorial Hospital.
It was not yet clear how the children were swapped.
