Johannesburg - Attempted murder charges have been brought against police officers involved in the shooting of musician Khuli Chana, Gauteng police said on Tuesday.

“The case docket will be forwarded to the Ipid for an independent investigation into what happened. All members involved were informed to avail themselves for the investigation,” said spokesman Lt-Col Lungelo Dlamini.

It was not immediately clear how many officers would be investigated by the Independent Police Investigative Directorate.

Chana, whose real name is Khulane Morule, was shot and wounded by police, reportedly in an unmarked vehicle in Midrand on Monday.

The officers, from Bedfordview, Johannesburg, were tracking kidnappers and mistook Chana's luxury sedan for that of the kidnappers.

A police officer, in his 30's, was arrested and charged with kidnapping and extortion on Monday.

“A 9mm pistol was found in his possession; he was arrested for house robbery and kidnapping. The suspect will appear in court tomorrow (Wednesday).”

The kidnap victim, a Bedfordview businessman, was found in Pretoria. A R100 000 ransom was demanded for his release.

“He was kidnapped after a house robbery and was dropped off in Pretoria. He was then brought to Attridgeville police station unharmed,” said Dlamini.

Further investigations were continuing. - Sapa
