Johannesburg - The Ministry of Police has 30 days to respond to papers filed by lawyers for rapper Khuli Chana indicating his intention to sue the SAPS for R2.7 million.
Chana’s management team issued a statement on Tuesday, saying: “As part of the due process in the civil case, his lawyers submitted a letter on Friday last week to the minister of police (Nathi Mthethwa) highlighting what transpired on the night in question, outlining costs incurred and income lost as a result of the shooting, and stating the intention to recoup this money via litigation.”
Chana, whose real name is Khulani Morule, was hit by bullet fragments in his back and hand on October 28 last year at a petrol station on the N1 in Midrand while police were investigating the kidnapping of a Tanzanian businessman.
It has been alleged that police identified the rapper’s car as being similar to one reported in the incident.
The circumstances surrounding the shooting are still unclear, as Chana maintained police had not flagged him down, and had opened fire without warning.
However, witnesses claim he tried to run down officers at a roadblock.
While Chana’s management team have maintained his innocence and that he was the victim, they said yesterday they were hopeful that an amicable resolution to this “painful episode” could still be found.
They could not give a detailed breakdown of the costs, saying they would need to clear that with the lawyers.
However, the amount covered medical expenses, damage to Chana’s car and loss of revenue.
Chana’s fans took to Twitter in support of his decision to sue.
“I’m glad Khuli is suing the police. Hope he gets every cent. They must pay!!!” tweeted @HarmonixEnt.
Another, @VogueRetro, tweeted: “Khuli Chana suing the police service for R2.7 million for wrongful shooting. Playing games, I would have sued for R20 million easy.”
And @masakalakeletso tweeted: “Khuli Chana suing da police for R2.7 million, that’s 2 little!
“He nearly lost his lyf & was shot by the same people who are meant 2 protect us!”
