Cape Town - Police arrested three men for ivory smuggling after running into them almost by chance.
Sea Point police were patrolling Victoria Road, Bantry Bay, on Saturday afternoon when they saw three suspicious-looking men carrying bags, said police liaison officer Captain FC van Wyk.
The patrolling offers stopped and searched the men.
To their surprise, they found one complete elephant tusk, nine tusk points and 17 segments, or pieces, of tusks in the bags.
The ivory weighed 90kg and its street value still had to be determined, Van Wyk said.
The trio, from Cameroon, aged between 27 and 49, were due to appear in the Cape Town Magistrate’s Court today on a charge of possession of ivory without documentation, Van Wyk said.
