Rustenburg - Several students at the Mafikeng campus of the North West University were injured when they clashed with campus security on Wednesday, the University said.

“There was an event to inaugurate the SRC (Student Representative Council) this morning, students disrupted the event,” said campus spokesman Koos Degenaar.

“Security used rubber bullets and tear gas to disperse the students. During the process several students were injured.”

He dismissed as unfounded earlier reports that a student was killed during the melee.

“It is incorrect that some one was killed. Reports that security used live ammunition are incorrect,” Degenaar said.
