Johannesburg - Celebrated Kaizer Chiefs star midfielder George Lebese has handed himself over to the police after being charged with abusing his girlfriend and damaging her car.

Lebese, who has been with Chiefs since 2008, allegedly beat up his girlfriend on Sunday evening in Silverton, Tshwane.

He also allegedly broke the windows of her car, police spokesman Lieutenant Kay Makhubela said.

His team on Tuesday put up a statement on their website, which said: “Kaizer Chiefs have been informed that George Lebese has been accused of being involved in an incident. The 26-year-old player has handed himself over to the relevant authorities.”

The player previously also dated singer Bucie of Superman fame, but she is not the one who laid the charges.

His fans shared their shock and, some, disgust on Twitter.

@TumeloLegodi tweeted: “Can’t begin to imagine George Lebese beating up his honey, man that’s backwards.”

@NekoIsMyName wrote: “George Lebese has been arrested for beating up his girlfriend *smh* they should lock him up and throw away the keys.”

@Lungastixx tweeted: “Im disappointed in you @George Lebese”

@mbongzamp worried that his arrest would affect his teammates, who are to clash against Bloemfontein Celtic on Wednesday night.

He said: “George Lebese arrested for assault… this will affect the spirit of his teammates.”

Makhubele said Lebese was due to appear in the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court on charges of assault and malicious damage to property.

Other Premier Soccer League players who had a brush with the law include former AmaZulu goalkeeper Mandla Sangweni, who was arrested in 2013 for allegedly shooting his uncle; SuperSport United midfielder Sibusiso Mahlangu, who was arrested in 2009 for the alleged rape of a 17-year-old girl; and

former Chiefs captain and goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune, who was arrested for negligent and reckless driving last year.
