Child rapist jailed after being caught in the act

Johannesburg - A 47-year-old man was sentenced to 15 years in prison on Friday after he was convicted of raping a seven year-old girl in Clermont, Durban.

Police spokesperson Captain Nqobile Gwala said the Pinetown Regional Court sentenced Themba Jali on Thursday.

Gwala said Jali was caught red-handed by a concerned neighbour who saw the little girl entering the accused house’s in March this year.

“The mother was informed by a neighbour that her daughter has been raped, the victim was then interviewed and confirmed that she was raped by the accused on different occasions,” Gwala said.

Gwala said the police were immediately contacted and the case of rape was registered at KwaDabeka police station.

“The Pinetown Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit took over the investigation and the culprit was eventually apprehended. He made several court appearances until his sentence,” Gwala said.

KwaZulu-Natal acting provincial commissioner Major General Bhekinkosi Langa welcomed the sentence.
