Durban - The 28-year-old woman who allegedly threw a little girl into the sea from a pier at Durban’s North Beach appeared in court on Wednesday for attempted murder.

According to the charge sheet before the Durban Magistrate’s Court, Nosipho Purity Ngubane had been “standing by the water when she was arrested after she had thrown the child into the water” on Sunday at about 2pm.

Police spokesman, Major Thulani Zwane, said it had yet to be established whether Ngubane was the biological mother of the child, who is believed to be three or four years old.

According to a police source, the child had been taken into care by social workers.

“We are still investigating Ngubane’s home address. She said she was from Ixopo, so we are looking for her relatives to confirm everything,” the source said.

The case was adjourned to later this month for a bail hearing.
