Johannesburg - Samwu on Monday sent condolences to the family of the Johannesburg metro police officer killed in a shoot-out with hijackers in Meadowlands, Soweto.

“We are saddened and devastated at the death of a law enforcement officer while on duty,” SA Municipal Workers Union spokesman Papikie Mohale said in a statement.

“The family now has to live with the reality of facing a black Christmas after they have been robbed of a beloved family member.”

The officer was shot dead on Friday, while his colleague was shot and wounded.

The two were patrolling in Meadowlands when they picked up the tracking device signal of a BMW that had been hijacked in Johannesburg during the day, SA Police Service spokesman Warrant Officer Kay Makhubela said at the time.

“When they approached the BMW, police and metro police were coming from either side,” Makhubela said.

“Three suspects standing outside the car saw the police. They started shooting at police and police returned fire.”

The two metro officers, in civilian clothes, were caught in the crossfire.

“One died at the scene and the other was taken to hospital,” he said.

The suspected hijackers fled the scene. A pistol and the hijacked car were recovered.
