Johannesburg - Eight men, including a police officer, have been arrested for allegedly kidnapping a man in Lenasia, south of Johannesburg, police said on Thursday.

The group was arrested on Wednesday, said Warrant Officer Kay Makhubela.

The 32-year-old man was kidnapped from a Lenasia petrol station on Tuesday. The kidnappers instructed their victim to withdraw money from his account.

“He withdrew R6060 and gave it to them,” Makhubela said.

On Wednesday, they instructed him to call his family and tell them they wanted a R90 000 ransom for his release.

The man's family notified the police, and then arranged to meet the kidnappers at the same petrol station where the man had been taken from.

The kidnappers, excluding the policeman, arrived at the petrol station in two cars and a panel van.

They were arrested and the kidnapped man was found blind-folded and handcuffed at the back of the panel van, said Makhubela.

“He was unharmed.”

The seven men then led police to Tembisa, where they had kept the kidnapped man. They also led police to the policeman who, they said, had been part of the plan.

All eight men would appear in the Protea Magistrate's Court on Friday.
