Durban - A dispute over unpaid rent resulted in a man being shot and killed, allegedly by his neighbour, a policeman, at his Bluff residence.

Martinus Johanes Britz, 48, from Port Elizabeth, tried to intervene in an argument between his elderly landlord and the policeman.

According to Britz’s wife, Carol Greyvenstein, her husband was standing up for the landlord who confronted the policeman about outstanding payments.

The policeman allegedly became aggressive and wanted to assault the landlord.

She said that her husband had been living in Durban for two months for work purposes.

Greyvenstein also said she was upset the police seemed to be dragging their feet with the investigation of the shooting.

Police spokesman Brigadier Jay Naicker confirmed the death.

“The motive of the killing is unknown at this stage. Brighton Beach police arrested a 36-year-old suspect at the scene and confiscated the murder weapon.

He was charged with murder and he will appear in the Durban Magistrate’s Court on Monday,” he said.
