Durban - A police constable is facing a charge of theft after R150 in cash that belonged to one of the six victims of a fatal road accident allegedly went missing.

On Wednesday, the 33-year-old officer appeared in court on a charge of theft.

He was granted bail of R2 000 and will appear again in the Colenso Magistrate’s Court on January 7.

Five people died when the car in which they were travelling collided with a bakkie near Colenso in northern KwaZulu-Natal on November 29.

The bakkie driver was seriously injured.

Police spokesman, Colonel Jay Naicker, said money recovered from one of the victims was “allegedly counted at the scene and then handed over to the policeman”, but when the money was counted again at the station later, R150 was found to be missing.

Internal disciplinary actions have also been instituted.
