Durban - A KwaNdengezi policeman allegedly shot dead a 22-year-old man after a pub brawl in the township near Pinetown at the weekend.
The bullet-riddled body of Philani Vumisa, 22, was discovered at about 4.30am on Sunday by a friend, a few hours after the policeman and the victim had been separated following an earlier confrontation.
The incident was confirmed by police spokesman Jay Naicker.
“It is alleged that the deceased attacked the suspect with a knife, and the suspect shot him. Police found the knife next to the deceased.”
The 30-year-old suspect was arrested by KwaNdengezi police and would be charged with murder, he said. He is expected to appear in the Pinetown Magistrate’s court soon.
Xolani Vumisa, Philani’s uncle, said the two had been having an ongoing battle.
He said the conflict started last year when another tavern in the area, allegedly belonging to the family of the policeman’s girlfriend, was broken into.
According to a police source, a case for the incident was never reported to police, but the family apparently asked the policeman to intervene and recoup the goods from Philani, who they claimed was the main suspect.
“The guy that was with Philani said he confronted the policeman at the pub late on Friday evening asking why he had implicated him in the break-in, and there was an altercation.”
Independent Police Investigative Directorate spokesman Moses Dlamini said he was not aware of the shooting.
