Johannesburg - Stunned police officers watched as one of their colleagues, a Flying Squad member, was arrested on duty for allegedly shooting his wife two years ago.

According to a source familiar with the investigation, the officer is alleged to have shot his wife in 2014 and claimed that it was the work of an intruder during a home invasion.

On Wednesday, just after 4pm, members of the elite Hawks investigating unit in two VW Golf GTi vehicles pounced on the officer at a Flying Squad station just outside the Vereeniging CBD.

As soon as the man’s colleagues at the station spotted members of the Hawks, they started pacing up and down around the yard.

Others huddled in groups, visibly panic-stricken.

Moments later, members of the Hawks emerged from the reception, escorting a handcuffed Flying Squad member. The officer, clad in full uniform, was escorted straight into the back of one of the vehicles.

His service pistol was confiscated, according to a source at the station.

As he was led to the car and shoved into the back seat, the officer looked sheepish, casting his eyes down.

The Star understands that the officer is being detained at De Deur police station near Vereeniging. He was expected to appear in the Vereeniging Magistrate’s Court on Thursday.

Comment from Hawks spokesperson Major Robert Netshiunda was not immediately available.
