Johannesburg - A police constable has been arrested for allegedly raping his sister-in-law in Ga-Rankuwa, north of Pretoria, while on bail for a separate attempted rape case, Ipid said on Friday.

The 33-year-old policeman was arrested for allegedly raping the woman last Thursday, said Independent Police Investigative Directorate spokesman Moses Dlamini.

The man asked his sister-in-law, 19, to stay at his house to help with household chores because his wife was going away.

The woman was sleeping in a room with the policeman's children when he came into the room to remove the children, apparently on the pretence that they might disturb her sleep.

The man returned to the room and allegedly raped her.

He was arrested on Wednesday and was expected to appear in the Ga-Rankuwa Magistrate's Court later on Friday. The Ipid intended opposing the man's application for bail.

It came to light during the Ipid investigation that the policeman was out on bail on another case of attempted rape, Dlamini said.
