Stanger - A police officer was arrested in KwaDukuza, near Stanger, on Monday in connection with the murder of two officers, KwaZulu-Natal police said.

The Hawks in the province made the arrest after piecing together evidence from the scene, Colonel Jay Naicker said.

The 53-year-old officer was expected to appear in the KwaDukuza Magistrate's Court on Wednesday.

Two police officers were shot and killed by three men in KwaDukuza on Saturday. Four officers stopped at the side of the R74 to investigate a red car, when three men emerged from the bush and shot the constable and student constable sitting in the front of the police vehicle. They were shot in the head.

One of the men got into the police vehicle and wrestled with the third officer for his firearm, said Naicker. The other officer, seated in the back, drew his firearm and shot at the men, who fled into the bushes.

Provincial commissioner Lt-Gen Mmamonnye Ngobeni on Monday expressed disappointed that a police officer had allegedly been involved in the killings.

“We will ensure that he gets no favours from the SAPS and faces the full might of the law...,” Ngobeni said.
