Durban - A policeman is recovering from a stab wound to the chest- and a burglar from surgery to save his fingers after he was attacked with a bush knife - during a home invasion in Malvern.

According to a police source, the burglar entered through the window of a home in Surlingham Road at 3am on Friday.

He entered the bedroom and was searching for items to steal when the wife awoke and saw him next to her bed. She pretendedg to be asleep and woke up her husband after the burglar had left the room.

The couple locked the bedroom door and alerted police.

Police spokesman, Captain Thulani Zwane, said when police arrived the burglar was still in the house. Constable Deon Govender, 32, of Malvern SAPS and his partner, whose name is unknown at this stage, conducted a room-by-room sweep of the house.

“When Govender entered one of the rooms, the burglar lunged at him and stabbed him once in the chest with a knife. The burglar was assaulted and is under police guard in a local hospital,” Zwane said.

The owner of the house, who did not want to be named, said he came to Govender’s aid and tried to fend off his attacker with a bush knife. Govender was taken to hospital where he received 13 stitches.

The source said the burglar underwent surgery yesterday to try to save his fingers.

A case of housebreaking and attempted murder is being investigated by Malvern police.
