Pretoria - A police constable was critically wounded in a shootout with three suspected hijackers in Pretoria, Gauteng police said on Monday.

The shooting took place on Sunday night after police received a tip-off about a hijacked vehicle found near a block of flats in Hatfield, Colonel Noxolo Kweza said.

“On arrival, when the suspects saw the police, they fired at them and the members returned fire.”

The three alleged hijackers and the constable were wounded in the shooting. Kweza could not provide details on the extent of their injuries.

The men were found in possession of a police blue light, a bulletproof vest, and three firearms. Three stolen VW Golfs were recovered.

Kweza said the trio would face charges of attempted murder, possession of stolen property, and possession of unlicensed firearms.
