Port Elizabeth - A 33-year old off-duty policeman from Hofmeyr in the Eastern Cape has been shot and killed.

Police Spokesperson, Captain Stefanie Smith, said the body of the police officer was found in a street in Zwide Extension in the Karoo town in the early hours of Sunday morning. She said he sustained a gunshot wound to the head.

Smith said the policeman's service pistol was found about a metre from his body not far from his girlfriend's residence. No arrests have been made and the motive for the murder is not known.

Cradock Cluster Commander, Brigadier Madoda Zamkana, said police would not rest until an arrest had been made. “It is the worst nightmare when one of our [own] is killed. We vow never to rest until an arrest is made and the person is successfully convicted. You kill a police officer, you temper with the peace and stability of this country,” said Zamkana.
