Cop guilty of stealing gum

An Mpumalanga reservist constable was sentenced to 60 days in prison with the option of paying a R1 000 fine for stealing a R10 pack of chewing gum, the Sowetan reported on Wednesday.

Joyce Siphiwe Mahlangu was arrested on Monday for stealing the Beechies from a Shoprite store in Kwaggafontein.

Police spokesman Lieutenant-Colonel Leonard Hlathi said she had walked into the supermarket to buy toiletries, and when she left a security guard checked her slip and what she had a bought.

“The guards found that she had not paid for the packet of Beechies in her possession.”

In addition to being found guilty in court, she would also face an inquiry at work. She paid the fine. – Sapa
