Cop hel for garage robbery

Bothaville, Free State - A policeman was arrested on Tuesday for robbing a garage together with five other men in Bothaville, Free State police said.

The 32-year-old constable, based at the Orkney police station in North West, was found at his home in Orkney, Captain Stephen Thakeng said.

Six armed men in two vehicles robbed the garage on Friday. Two of them were wearing police bullet-proof vests.

Thakeng said they took money, and four petrol attendants' cellphones and wallets.

Acting on a tip-off, police arrested four men in Bothaville on Monday.

“Two of them were in a Tiida when we stopped them, and the other two were in the BMW,” he said.

Two bullet-proof vests, four cellphones and four wallets were recovered.

A fifth man was arrested with his girlfriend at his home in Odendaalsrus on Tuesday morning. They were found in possession of a 9mm pistol.

The six men would appear in the Bothaville Magistrate's Court on Wednesday on charges of armed robbery.

The fifth man arrested would also appear, with his girlfriend, on a charge of possession of an unlicensed firearm. - Sapa
