Durban - An eThekwini metro police officer appeared briefly in the Durban Magistrate's Court on Friday for allegedly shooting dead his girlfriend.

Magistrate Vanitha Armu adjourned the case against Devon Govender to next Thursday to allow him to make a formal application for bail.

Govender’s girlfriend, high-flying businesswoman Rose Bell, was found dead in her plush Durban North home late on Tuesday, soon after neighbours heard a muffled gunshot and screams.

The body of the 32-year-old mother, a former taxi boss who owned other businesses, was found with a bullet wound in her lower abdomen.

A neighbour, who requested anonymity said that just after 10pm, “I heard a muffled shot and three screams. Then it all went dead”.

Metro police confirmed on Wednesday the officer had his service pistol with him at the time of the shooting.

eThekwini metro police spokesman Senior Superintendent Eugene Msomi told Sapa on Friday morning that Govender was off-duty at the time of the shooting.

The case was being investigated by the SA Police Service and the Independent Police Investigative Directorate.

Msomi said police were also investigating whether the officer had used his service pistol in the alleged crime.
