Pretoria - A police constable accused of attempted murder was granted bail of R1000 by the High Court in Pretoria on Tuesday, the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (Ipid) said.

Spokesman Moses Dlamini said in a statement that the matter started on Friday when the policeman was involved in a car accident in Olievenhoutbosch, Centurion.

A woman, who was driving the other car involved in the crash, conceded that she had caused the accident and was liable for the damage.

The following day, the woman and her brother-in-law went to the policeman's house to discuss the matter and the two men began arguing.

The policeman allegedly picked up a brick and hit the other man on the head with it.

“A fight ensued after which the suspect ran into the house to fetch his service pistol. He apparently fired shots towards the woman's brother-in-law,” Dlamini said.

The constable would appear in court again on July 23.
