A Cape Town police reservist accused of rape appeared in the Bellville Magistrate's Court on Monday, the Independent Police Investigative Directorate said.

Spokesman Moses Dlamini said the officer was arrested on Saturday for allegedly raping a homeless man in Bellville.

The matter was postponed June 21 for a bail application.

Dlamini said the homeless man, 39, went to the Bellville police station looking for a place to sleep on Thursday. He was taken to a room at the back of the station.

“A police officer apparently pulled down the victim's pants and underwear. It is alleged that (he) then raped the victim”, he said.

The matter was reported the next day after the victim went to hospital. - Sapa
