File Photo - A 49-year-old man was charged after his girlfriend found pornographic images on his personal computer and reported this to the police.
A 49-year-old man, who claims he is a police informant, has been found guilty on 500 counts of possession of child pornography.
Karel Erasmus pleaded guilty to the charges against him, but told the Pretoria Regional Court he was collecting evidence and preparing a docket to present to the SAPS.
Magistrate Graham Travers said he could not accept a plea of “guilty” if entered with an explanation. He suggested Erasmus rethink his plea. The magistrate presented the defence with the necessary case law and the plea explanation was amended to a simple plea of guilt, which the court accepted.
Erasmus was charged in May 2010 after his girlfriend found pornographic images on his personal computer and reported this to the police.
He was released on bail of R1 500 after his first appearance.
The court heard on Tuesday that all the images were of children under 18 years and depicted acts of bestiality, masturbation, anal penetration and exposure of sex organs.
Brigadier Gerard Labuschagne of the SAPS Investigative Psychology Unit testified in camera in aggravation of sentence.
The testimony of Labuschagne was also heard in camera due to the sensitivity of the evidence.
The case continues. - Pretoria News
