Durban - A Durban policeman is being investigated for rape after he allegedly sexually assaulted a female complainant at the Workshop satellite police station.

Provincial police spokesman Captain Thulani Zwane confirmed the incident saying the police lieutenant was being investigated by the Independent Police Investigative Directorate. He said the SAPS had also taken steps against the policeman after the incident two weeks ago.

“A criminal case of rape has been opened against the policeman. He is, however, still at work until a directive is given by the provincial commissioner,” said Zwane.

According to a police source, the victim had gone to the police station to open a robbery case. “She was apparently the last complainant for the day and had been assisted by this police officer, who had then taken her to an office at the station where he had allegedly raped her,” he said.

The victim had reported the matter to the Independent Police Investigative Directorate.

Meanwhile, a 19-second video, seen by The Mercury, is doing the rounds showing another Durban policeman dressed in full uniform having sexual intercourse with an unidentified woman at another satellite police station in Durban.

Zwane confirmed they were aware of the video.

The police would take internal disciplinary steps, he said.
