Kempton Park - An East Rand policeman has been jailed for 20 years for killing an infant and a 51-year-old woman, the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (Ipid) said on Thursday.
Charles Mohlannka Kekana, a warrant officer stationed in Tembisa, east of Johannesburg, was sentenced by the High Court in Johannesburg on Wednesday.
He murdered 51-year-old Mamokene Amelia Mosia and baby Amen Kgotsho Mosia last year.
“On 20 April, 2012 at about 2.30pm, off-duty Warrant Officer Kekana went to Pomona informal settlement in Kempton Park,” said Ipid spokesman Moses Dlamini.
“He was in possession of his service pistol and he shot and killed the 51-year-old woman, who was carrying a baby.”
Kekana's sister had earlier been arrested for dealing in dagga and he had threatened to kill whoever had given the police information. Dlamini said Kekana was drunk at the time. Both victims died on the scene.
“The adult deceased was shot in the head and abdomen, while the child was shot in the back.”
Kekana was sentenced to 20 years for killing Mosia and to 15 years for killing the infant. The sentences would run concurrently.
The court declared Kekana unfit to hold a firearm. - Sapa
