INDEPENDENT NEWSPAPERS

A Durban police officer was kidnapped while on his way to work, KwaZulu-Natal police said on Saturday.

The 59-year-old lieutenant left his home in Umlazi's W Section before 8am on Friday when he was apparently confronted at gunpoint and forced into a car, said Lt-Col Vincent Mdunge.

“He phoned his wife to say he had been kidnapped by strange people...and that they were fleeing with him in an unknown direction.”

Police were then alerted.

His cellphone signal was traced to the Dalton hostel, and then lost.

Police searched the hostel, but found no sign of the officer.

The policeman, who worked at the Umbilo police station, has not been heard from since.

Mdunge said this kidnapping was not work-related. - Sapa
