Mthatha - A woman police officer has been shot dead, allegedly by her traffic officer husband in Mthatha, in the Eastern Cape, police said on Wednesday.

Brigadier Marinda Mills said the man allegedly used his service pistol to kill Constable Nompucuko Toni, 30, before shooting himself on Sunday.

Mills said the man was in a serious condition in hospital, under police guard.

The couple apparently started fighting when Toni returned from Port Elizabeth on Sunday. She had been away on duty during the Africa Cup of Nations soccer tournament, said Mills. - Sapa
