Durban - A bail application by five men accused of killing a policeman was postponed by the Pinetown Magistrate's Court on Tuesday to allow some of them to obtain legal representation.

When court proceedings started, it emerged that Mthozi Ngcobo, 25, and Khulekani Vilikazi, 20, had lawyers, but Lungani Mayiwa, 25, Anele Gumbi, 20, and Siyabonga Hlophe, 22, did not.

At their previous appearance on December 2, their court-appointed lawyer said she could not represent all of them because of an undisclosed conflict of interest.

Magistrate Nkosiyazi Ngcobo adjourned the matter to January 10 to allow Mayiwa, Gumbi, and Hlophe time to arrange legal representation.

They are accused of involvement in the killing of Thabo Mlotshwa, 32, of the police national intervention unit, on November 15. He was found buried in a shallow grave.

All five remain in custody.
