Ladysmith - A police officer and a relative were robbed and shot dead in the Ladysmith CBD, KwaZulu-Natal police said on Wednesday.
Constable Sphamandla Mgaga, 28 and his relative Nonkululeko, also 28, were killed on Tuesday evening, Colonel Jay Naicker said.
“Earlier in the day Constable Mgaga received a call from his relative who requested that he assist her as she was afraid of her boyfriend who was being very abusive.”
Mgaga went to pick Nonkululeko up from work.
“It is alleged that the (two) were inside the vehicle when the suspect opened the door and shot Nonkululeko in the head,” Naicker said.
When Mgaga got out the car he was also shot.
Nonkululeko Mgaga died at the scene. Sphamandla Mgaga died on his way to hospital.
“The suspect allegedly removed the deceased's firearm and cellphones before fleeing.”
Police were searching for a suspect, who was known to them, said Naicker.
