Johannesburg - A police officer has been shot and killed at the Tembisa Magistrate's Court, allegedly by a prisoner he was escorting.

While police sources have confirmed the shooting, few details had been released by SAPS provincial communications at the time of publication. However, multiple media reports have said the officer, believed to be a captain, was bringing a prisoner into the courthouse for a scheduled court appearance.

The prisoner allegedly disarmed his police escort, grabbed his gun and killed the officer.

After police investigators arrived on the scene, the courthouse was shut and those expected to appear on Wednesday will have their cases postponed to a later date.
