Cape Town - A Cape Town police officer is under investigation after the death of a man he shot.

The Kayamandi police officer killed a man who had been fighting near the police station on Sunday.

The shooting took place on Sunday morning close to the Kayamandi Satellite Police Station, near Stellenbosch.

According to the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (Ipid) spokesman Moses Dlamini, the police had been called out to a scene where two men were fighting.

One of the men was wielding a panga and had already hacked and injured his rival.

Dlamini said the police had tried to control the antagonists, but the two men had continued with the brawl which seemed to reach a point where it was out of control.

“The police member fired a shot at the man who had the panga.”

He said the man had been hit and was then rushed to the nearest hospital where he died.

The other man was in a serious condition and was being treated in hospital, said Dlamini.

According to information from the scene, the police officer had acted “within his duties”, said Dlamini.

However, he said, Ipid would continue investigating the matter.
