A police constable was shot five times as he approached a car in Khuma, North West police said on Wednesday.

Captain Adéle Myburgh said Constable Zolile Simon Jas was shot around 10pm on Tuesday in Bergen Street, Khuma near Klerksdorp.

“He was hit five times, in his hips, legs and ankle.”

Jas was in hospital in a stable condition. He and his colleague, Constable Mokibelo Patric Lehong, 30, had scanned the registration number of a parked bakkie.

“The constables approached the bakkie as the registration number did not match the bakkie.”

The four men in the bakkie opened fire and shot at the officers with an automatic rifle. The men drove about 100m before abandoning the bakkie and fleeing on foot.

They were still at large and a case of attempted murder was being investigated. The abandoned bakkie was seized. – Sapa
