A policeman and a wanted criminal were wounded in a shoot-out in Umlazi on Friday, KwaZulu-Natal police said.

Colonel Jay Naicker said police approached the hideout of three men thought to be responsible for several cases of armed robbery, attempted murder and rape in the area.

“The men opened fire as police approached them and a shoot-out occurred in which a policeman as well as a suspect were wounded.”

He said the two other men ran away.

“The wounded police officer was taken to hospital for treatment, whilst the 34-year-old suspect is under police guard in hospital,” Naicker said.

The man faces charges of attempted murder and possession of unlicensed firearms. He will appear in the Umlazi Magistrate's Court soon. - Sapa
