Johannesburg - A man was arrested at the Meadowlands hostel in Soweto on Thursday for attempted murder and possession of copper worth R40 000, Gauteng police said.

“Police received a tip-off from the community members about a group of suspects who were busy stealing copper cables,” said Constable Sibusiso Chauke.

The group fired shots at police when they arrived at the scene.

“Police retaliated and the suspects started to run and police spotted one suspect who tried to hide in the trench,” said Chauke.

They approached the 29-year-old and found the copper in his possession.

He would appear in the Orlando Magistrate's Court on Friday.
