Secunda - Three former members of the Secunda flying squad will find the roles reversed when they appear in court in connection with corruption and drug-dealing charges next week, the Hawks said on Sunday.

The constables' arrests followed an incident in March last year when the three stopped a vehicle along the N17 Highway next to the Trichardt toll gate, Brigadier Hangwani Mulaudzi said.

Two men, including, a Lesotho man who was illegally in the country, were in the car in which 45 blocks of compressed dagga, worth R250 000, was discovered.

“Instead of locking up the suspects, the trio started making demands of a R20 000 bribe,” Mulaudzi said.

When the men in the car could not produce the bribe money, the cops apparently took the dagga and hid it in bushes along the R547. They also took the Lesotho resident captive.

They then allowed the men to call their boss for the money.

“The money was paid but chaos erupted when the police could not locate the spot in which they had hidden the dagga,” Mulaudzi said.

“The police refused to give back the money and eventually a case was opened.”

Mulaudzi said subsequent to an investigation, the three were arrested.

They recently made an initial appearance in the Secunda Magistrate's court and will return to the dock on Friday next week.
