Six men believed to be members of Gauteng's blue light gang were arrested in Johannesburg on Wednesday, police said.

Captain Pinky Tsinyane said they were taken into custody at a Hillbrow flat and a house in Troyeville where blue lights, sirens and three rifles were confiscated.

“Police were working on another case when investigations led (to) the arrests,” she said.

Provincial police commissioner Major-General Pumza Gela warned in May that police were looking for a group of men behind a series of hijackings and robberies. They posed as police officers.

“About three to five people would be in an unmarked car, mostly white Golfs which were fitted with blue lights,” he said.

“They were behind the hijacking and the robbing of people after hours, when it was not safe to stop.”

The gang apparently targeted the East Rand and northern suburbs of Johannesburg.

They were expected to appear in the Johannesburg Magistrate's Court soon. - Sapa
