Johannesburg - A man allegedly shot and killed another man and shot at police officers in the Johannesburg CBD on Saturday, metro police said.

The man shot and killed a man, who was believed to be in his fifties, at the corner of Wanderers street and Klein street in Johannesburg, said Senior Superintendent Wayne Minnaar.

Police officers heard the gunshots and found the man, who was in possession of a firearm, running up King George street.

When they attempted to apprehend the man, he shot at them, Minnaar said.

The officers then returned fire and shot and injured the man in his right leg.

“None of the police officers were injured,” Minnaar said.

The man, who was believed to be in his thirties, was taken to a nearby hospital under police guard.

He would be charged with murder and attempted murder.
