Johannesburg - Two police constables were shot and wounded on Wednesday during a shoot-out with a group of men in Dawn Park, east of Johannesburg, Gauteng police said.

The two officers, aged 38 and 40, were shot in the upper body and the hand respectively around 10am while patrolling the area, Lt-Col Lungelo Dlamini said.

They were taken to Union Hospital in Alberton.

The officers earlier approached a vehicle containing five people which had raised their suspicions.

Two men jumped out of the car and began firing shots at the officers.

“Police returned fire. Two suspects then fled the scene on foot while the other three drove away,” Dlamini said.

It was not clear whether the men from the car were wounded or not.

No arrests had yet been made.
