Polokwane - Police are investigating a case of fraud against four people in Tzaneen, Limpopo police said on Friday.

“These suspects are committing fraud in various ways in the banks and through mobile banking or cellphone banking systems,” said Lt-Col Moatshe Ngoepe, according to a Sapa correspondent.

They allegedly processed counterfeit identity documents containing their own photographs, but their victims' identity numbers.

“With this fraudulent ID book they go to the bank and apply for a personal loan and get it. They access your mobile or cellphone banking system and start to transfer your money to their bank accounts,” Ngoepe said.

He said the fraudsters also called people promising quick personal loans in exchange for an advance payment of an administration fee, but could no longer be reached once the money was deposited.

Ngoepe said the amount involved was estimated at R130 000. Cases dated back to April last year.

The police were concerned that more people were falling victim to these scams and warned them to be careful.
