Johannesburg - A man was arrested for allegedly robbing a shop in Meadowlands, Soweto, on Thursday, Gauteng police said.

A resident witnessed the crime and alerted police, Constable Sibusiso Chauke said.

“It happened in front of the community members and a community member gave the police positive information by giving them the description of the suspects and the direction they took,” Chauke said.

The 26-year-old man and three other people, one of them armed, entered the shop and allegedly stole cash, airtime and cigarettes.

“The suspects started to run away and police gave chase and managed to arrest one of them and recovered a firearm with a serial number filed off,” Chauke said.

The 26-year-old was also found with R395 cash, which was believed to be stolen from the shop during the robbery.

“Police are busy with further investigation and more arrests are imminent,” Chauke said.

The arrested suspect would appear in the Orlando Magistrate's Court soon.
