Johannesburg - Six men are set to appear in Gelvandale Magistrate's Court after they were arrested for being in possession of illegal firearms and ammunition in Port Elizabeth over the weekend.

Spokesperson Colonel Priscilla Naidu said on Saturday, at about 09:50 police from Gelvandale responded to a tip off that a suspicious vehicle had been seen in Liebenberg Street.

Naidu said police were following the vehicle when the driver and passenger alighted from their vehicle and fled on foot. A police officer noticed the passenger dispose of a firearm before he ran. A 29-year-old suspect was arrested. Naidu said a 9mm pistol with two rounds of ammunition was recovered. The firearm had been reported stolen in Bethelsdorp this month.

On the same day at about 19:20 hours five suspects aged between 17-25 were arrested by Bethelsdorp Vispol. “The driver was seen opening the door,” said Naidu. He tried to dispose a firearm, however, police recovered the Astra pistol and 8 rounds.

The arrested suspects were expected to appear in court on Monday.
