Johannesburg - Two people were arrested on Thursday after a shoot-out with police in Buccleuch, northern Johannesburg, Gauteng police said.

Lt-Col Lungelo Dlamini said several men in a VW Golf allegedly robbed a cigarette truck at Glen Marais Mall, in Kempton Park, Ekurhuleni.

“Boxes of cigarettes were loaded into a Quantum truck with an unknown number of suspects. Both vehicles of the suspects then drove away. Police were alerted and given a description of both vehicles,” he said.

Police then chased the Golf from Rabie Ridge to the Old Pretoria Road where the suspects were involved in a shoot-out with a member of Gauteng's flying squad.

“As the shooting continued, suspects abandoned a Golf and tried to hijack another vehicle. In the process, a police chopper had already joined the chase and suspects also abandoned a hijacked vehicle and ran away on foot,” Dlamini said.

“It is where both of them were arrested.”

No one was injured in the incident, but a police vehicle was damaged. An unlicensed R5 rifle was recovered.

“Other suspects who were driving in a Quantum are still at large. Approximately R30 000 worth of cigarettes were stolen,” Dlamini said.

The two would appear in the Kempton Park Magistrate's Court within 48 hours.
