Port Alfred - Port Alfred police were searching for four men who broke into a holiday home, then attacked and robbed three fisherman at the weekend, Eastern Cape police said on Monday.

“It is alleged that at about 10pm on Saturday, four men entered a house in Anglers Way by gaining access through a sliding door,” Lieutenant Luvuyo Mjekula said.

“They attacked three elderly occupants, tied them up and fled with cellphones, alcohol and an undisclosed amount of cash.”

The three fishermen, aged 60, 61 and 63, sustained various injuries, including stab wounds.

Two were taken to the local hospital after the attack and one was later transferred to a Port Elizabeth hospital.

“The victim admitted to the local hospital was discharged and is reported to have returned to the Free State,” Mjekula said.

“It has been established that the victims were on a fishing trip in Port Alfred and one of them, Gerhardus Sonnekus, 61, is a former South African rugby player.”

A case of house robbery and two counts of attempted murder have been opened.
