Johannesburg - Pretoria police are searching for a 24-year-old woman who allegedly stole a three-month-old baby girl from her mother over two weeks ago in Soshanguve, SABC radio news reported on Sunday.

Spokesman Matthew Nkoadi said the suspect was known as Johanna Rambau and had been staying in the township's Extension 4 for a while.

Nkoadi said Rambau allegedly stopped the baby's mother as she was taking her to creche, and promised to look after her.

She however allegedly disappeared with the infant and her cellphone has since been switched off.

Nkoadi says some people allege to have seen Rambau taking a taxi to Rustenburg with the baby. Anyone who has seen her is urged to contact their local police station. - Sapa
