Durban - KwaZulu-Natal police said on Wednesday they seized at least 420 tons of illegal fireworks in two separate cases.

A fireworks vendor in Riverhorse Valley, Durban, was discovered by the police's explosives unit to have more than 300 tons of fireworks, spokesman Lt-Col Vincent Mdunge said.

His licence only allowed him to store one ton.

In a second case in Durban's Sydney Road, a vendor was found in possession of 120 tons of fireworks worth around R2 million, as well as R2.5 million worth of counterfeit clothing.

Police confiscated the fireworks and made an application to have them destroyed. The counterfeit clothing had been handed to customs officials from the SA Revenue Service. - Sapa
