Johannesburg - A large number of weapons, including pangas and knives, have been seized in two Eastern Cape towns, police said on Monday.

“Police members recovered loads of dangerous weapons from boys in different villages in both towns of Centane and Willowvale,” Captain Jackson Manatha said.

“The weapons are used during faction fights, as the boys normally fight, as other boys are not supposed to visit certain villages.”

He said the weapons were seized over the course of last week. No firearms were recovered.

“The faction fights date back... [to] the olden days of their fore-fathers, who used to fight over pigs and guitars, resulting in many murders,” he said.

“Besides the confiscation of dangerous weapons, police held a string of crime awareness campaigns and imbizos to preach peace among the boys.”
