Durban - A robber has been shot dead by police in Harding, KwaZulu-Natal, police said on Wednesday.

The man was shot when police were trying to arrest him on Tuesday, Colonel Jay Naicker said.

Naicker said the man allegedly opened fire on police first. He and two other men had earlier robbed a 25-year-old man of money.

“The victim was on his way to the bank in Harding and was walking along Hawkins Street when he was approached by two suspects,” Naicker said.

“They allegedly shot at him twice in the leg and grabbed his money which he was going to deposit at the bank.”

Two of the men were arrested in Harding.

They are expected appear in the Harding Magistrate's Court soon facing charges of robbery, attempted murder and possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.
