Kempton Park - Two policemen were wounded and a man committed suicide on Tuesday during a shootout in Kempton Park on the East Rand.

Officers on patrol tried to pull over a minibus taxi with about 10 occupants, police spokeswoman Lt-Col Katlego Mogale said.

When they told the minibus taxi driver to pull over he sped off. They lost sight of the taxi, but another officer later saw it in Sebenza, Edenvale. The policeman gave chase and the men in the minibus started shooting.

When the taxi was finally cornered on Parkland Drive its occupants jumped out and ran away. A shootout ensued, in a veld near Modderfontein Road.

“Three suspects were arrested, but the fourth one shot himself. He died on the scene.”

Two officers were injured. Three firearms were recovered, which police said had been used in an armed robbery in Brakpan.

A manhunt was on for another five men who escaped. - Sapa
